Preliminary estimates of transportation sector energy consumption indicate that, for August 2016, the transportation sector accounted for 29% of US total energy consumption. Total energy consumption in the sector equaled 2.5 quadrillion Btu, a 2% increase from August 2015.
Petroleum accounted for 92% of total energy consumption in the transportation sector. Biomass accounted for 5% of sector consumption, while natural gas accounted for 2%. Electricity retail sales and electrical system energy losses accounted for less than 1%.
